Marine Technician Certification

ABYC Corrosion Certification

The ABYC Corrosion Certification course is a comprehensive, four and one half day course, which covers all aspects of marine corrosion. In the afternoon of the fifth day, a 200-question certification exam will be administered. The course will start at the beginning covering general corrosion theory and how to identify various types of corrosion. An in-depth look at typical marine building materials and the individual properties of each, and how they are affected by corrosion will follow. The course will then move into corrosion control methods and applications and will look at both sacrificial cathodic protection systems as well as impressed current systems. An in-depth look at corrosion protective coatings and the effect of anti-fouling paints will follow. Finally, the methodology for performing a corrosion survey will be discussed in great detail. Various test procedures, and equipment required to perform such a survey will be demonstrated in class with the focus on what's implied by the various meter readings. Besides classroom lecture, the course will offer a mix of extensive visual representations of corrosion problems and solutions, as well as live demonstrations of the key equipment being used. The successful student can rest assured that the certification achieved is the most recognized and comprehensive marine specific program presently available.

Note: It is strongly recommended that candidates for the Corrosion Certification attend one or more of the ABYC's electrical courses prior to attending this course.
